Crocheting
-
How do I eliminate ends with crocheting?
When crocheting, you can eliminate the need to run in ends. Take the loose end, lay it along the top of the last row, and work right over it. This works great if you have a pattern that changes color frequently. No muss, no fuss, no ends sticking out.

What if my pattern doesn’t work out on the first row?
If you are crocheting on a larger piece, such as a blanket, work your foundation chain with a separate ball of yarn. Then attach the yarn from a new ball at the first chain of foundation and work the first row. This way you will be able to add or subtract chains if you miscounted the first time, or you can add chains if you need more stitches.

How do I make a gauge swatch?
Gauge is extremely important when knitting or crocheting garments because it is what determines the final dimensions and size. Also when checking your gauge, you want to make the swatch a little larger than the 4” suggestion. This makes measuring the swatch much easier. When you knit/crochet your gauge swatch, begin with the recommended needle/hook size. If you have the same number of stitches, your gauge is correct. If you have fewer stitches, you need to try again with a smaller needle. If you have too many stitches, you need to try again with a larger needle.
For example, your pattern may state that gauge is 4” over 20 stitches and 16 rows. I am suggesting that you work 25 stitches for about 20 rows. Then, take your work off the needle and measure. If you have 18 stitches over 4”, decrease your needle size by one and make another swatch.
