  1. How do I create a smooth edge on my knitted garment?
It is sometimes difficult to maintain a neat and smooth edge while knitting. This is important when working on garments such as scarves. Also, a nice, clean edge makes it a lot easier when seaming garment pieces together. For a neat and firm edge, pattern to the end of each row and stop at the last stitch. Yarn forward and slip the last stitch. Do this on every row. This will create a tighter and smoother edge.

  2. How to I make a gauge swatch?
Gauge is extremely important when knitting or crocheting garments because it is what determines the final dimensions and size. Also when checking your gauge, you want to make the swatch a little larger than the 4” suggestion. This makes measuring the swatch much easier. When you knit/crochet your gauge swatch, begin with the recommended needle/hook size. If you have the same number of stitches, your gauge is correct. If you have fewer stitches, you need to try again with a smaller needle. If you have too many stitches, you need to try again with a larger needle.

For example, your pattern may state that gauge is 4” over 20 stitches and 16 rows. I am suggesting that you work 25 stitches for about 20 rows. Then, take your work off the needle and measure. If you have 18 stitches over 4”, decrease your needle size by one and make another swatch.
